Body Image Concerns

The Last Thing You Think About Before the Door Opens

There’s a room you’re about to walk into, a meeting, a showing, a shift, a call that goes live, and you’ve prepared carefully, and the last thing crossing your mind before it starts has nothing to do with what you prepared.

In your line of work, your presentation is part of the pitch, so this has never felt like vanity: it’s how your competence gets read before you’ve said a word.

Afterward, someone tells you that you look wonderful, and the words crawl rather than land, because a compliment about how you look is still a report you were being looked at.

The thoughts about it are always there, and the tiring part is how ordinary that has come to feel.

Your Harshness Toward Yourself Started as Protection

Underneath the criticism you aim at yourself, there’s usually a strategy that made sense once: say the unkind thing first, and nobody else gets to say it as hard, and it worked well enough to be worth keeping, which is exactly why it’s so hard to put down now.

Asking less of a room worked on the same logic, a bet that if you needed less of it, you’d be allowed to stay in it.

What was built, over time, is a greenhouse: your body kept to conditions nobody could hold steady, tended constantly, and acceptable only while the tending continues.

You were never the defect in the atmosphere you grew up in.

Learn to be Comfortable Feeling Uncomfortable

We’ll say the honest part first: a good deal of this work is learning to be comfortable feeling uncomfortable, and the uncomfortable arrives before anything else does.

Much of what we do is somatic, drawn from our Somatic Experiencing training, which means getting curious together about what your body is telling you in a moment rather than what you learned it’s supposed to say.

Separating fact from fiction about being in your body takes practice, so we go slowly, in pieces small enough that you don’t have to leave the room in your head to get through them.

And when words aren’t reaching it, we’ll draw it or write it or make something of it instead, because there’s a part of this that thinking harder has never once touched.

You Walk In Thinking About the Work

Neutral is the word that comes to mind for where this tends to head: a body you’re not negotiating with all day, one you can be in while you get on with your life.

Clients describe it as looking at themselves through their own inner wisdom rather than only with their eyes.

And there’s a version of that room where the last thing crossing your mind before it starts is the work you came to do.

For some, the dial keeps moving from there, toward real respect for what your body has carried.

Is This Enough of a Problem to Bring Us?

Plenty of people ask us some version of that, and nothing here asks you to arrive with a diagnosis or the certainty that it’s serious enough to count.

A free consultation is where we’d start, and you’re welcome to bring the rehearsed version of this or the one you’ve never said out loud, whichever is nearer to hand.

Everything happens online, anywhere in Texas, and Alana’s address is amccraw@plantedtobloomcounseling.org.

A short conversation is enough to tell whether we’re the people you want with you in this.
